The Door Steps: Streets Were Never Meant to be a Home Project will work to build safety and reduce the number of homeless womyn in the City of Prince George through the provision of low barrier supports through the PGNHS drop-in center. This initiative meets individuals where they are at and addresses all stages of homelessness. The project will have three focal points, addressing urgent needs, transition needs and set up needs.

The Reaching Home funds will contribute towards the Clean & Safe Program which works to address the systemic hygiene issues resulting from the homeless and at-risk populations living on the streets of Prince George while also creating employment for DART employees who are made up of the unemployed, underemployed and those at risk of homelessness. The intent is to provide low barrier to entry employment, provide training to assist with success in the workplace and with health and addictions barriers. Following a period of economic instability and rising food/housing costs, more individuals are finding themselves accessing social services such as food and temporary shelter.

The Reaching Home funds will support 2.5 Evening Outreach Workers. Under the program, workers will connect with clients and individuals providing direct engagement dispensing drinks, sandwiches and snacks and providing supportive services such as assisting with securing shelter or other services that may be required throughout the evening hours.

The Reaching Home funds will contribute towards the support of 2 Housing workers who will support a minimum of 120 clients with securing safe affordable housing - minimum from group termed hardest to house. The Housing Workers will also form 3 new relationships with landlords/property management, continue client supports, oversee the ‘by names’ list, assist in achieving second chance housing and provide ongoing support.

The Reaching Home funds will contribute towards one Program Worker who will support individuals released from a psychiatric unit or psychiatric home into shelters or homelessness to ensure that the appropriate connections to community services are in place for them to access necessary medications and medical follow-ups. Measurable goals are defined and set by the individual then supported to achievement and tracked by staff.

The Reaching Home funds will be utilized to support two full time Coordinator/Assistant positions for the purposes of addressing food insecurity issues in the City of Prince George. The St. Vincent De Paul team of staff and volunteers will work to prepare and distribute a minimum of one nutritious meal per day to individuals experiencing homelessness and those facing risk of homelessness. The team will also work to prepare and distribute food hampers to those individuals and families facing food security issues on a weekly basis.

To support 1.5 Employment Facilitators who will assist individuals who are homeless, marginally housed or at risk of homelessness to participate in employment related activities over the duration of the program.

Reaching Home funds will be utilized for a Transitional Support Coordinator who will support current tenants as well as work with individuals in the justice system with discharge planning and continued support once released.

A full time Housing Outreach Worker will be supported to work with youth who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The Housing Outreach Worker will work to support youth by assisting them with addressing varying challenges and barriers they are currently experiencing ranging from addressing basic emergent needs, to basic life skills development to assisting in the process of maintaining and/or securing safe adequate housing opportunities through resources and referrals.

The Fire Pit Cultural Drop In Center: the Gathering Space is designed to address both immediate basic needs and long term strategies to reduce homelessness in the community. Street involved people and others who experience various levels of homelessness, poverty, life with addictions and mental health complications face a variety of barriers to accessing the key social determinants of health. These barriers do not allow for the attainment of housing security, food security, positive health outcomes, addictions support, and access to employment opportunities. The Fire Pit is founded on the experience and research that if we can assist Indigenous people to connect with their culture, it lays the foundation for people to move out of cycles of homelessness, addictions and poverty as a positive cultural identity encourages self-sufficiency and can result in improved health status.
