In the colder months, the Hama?elas Community Kitchen staff tend to see more nightly guests attending the kitchen.  From October through December the Community Kitchen served 6201 hot dinner meals and received 296 pounds of food donations from the Campbell River Food Bank.  Unfortunately, food bank donations are down even further than the last quarter due to a transportation issue with Costco in nearby Courtenay.  In this reporting period, we have been able to bring together volunteers for training in conflict management, training that will be utilized to de-escalate conflicts as they arise.  Laichwiltach Family Society has fostered working partnerships with additional agencies to pool resources and information available to people at risk of or experiencing homelessness in Campbell River.  The Kitchen guests have benefitted directly from the results of partnerships with other organizations pooling information and resources by having an announcement each night during the colder months of which places have available shelter beds or warming spaces. This information is crucial for keeping people safe throughout the night.  We are also seeing some support from local decision makers and increased involvement. The City of Campbell River has hired a consultant to track the number of guests who eat at The Kitchen, to learn where they live and additional information which will inform community planning, emerging social services and more supportive housing.
