Laichwiltach Family Life Society operates a homelessness food kitchen to provide nutritious meals to those at risk of or experiencing homelessness in the Campbell River area seven days a week.  From July through September, the Hama?elas Community Kitchen served 5856 hot dinner meals and received 320 lbs. of donations from the Campbell River Food Bank.  Unfortunately, food bank donations have decreased recently in comparison to the average month because grocery stores are creating less excess.  In addition to providing nutritious meals and a communal space to gather and eat, the Hama?elas Community Kitchen hosted a free workshop: Eating Well on a Budget which was well attended.  The event was led by an Island Health dietician and financially supported by United Way BC.  Participants learned how to make a protein packed well-balanced salad.  These kinds of food security events hosted in the Hama?elas Community Kitchen do a great job of advertising the efforts of our volunteers and funders in the operations of the dining service.  As a result, this session led to a number of participants signing up as volunteers.
